When is an hour not really an hour?

I was going to post this on the Newbie board, but I'm looking specifically for this info as it pertains to some of the popular providers in MA/So. NH.

How do I know if a 1 hour appointment is really going to be for a full/fun-filled hour or just one strike and I'm out?  I'm guessing the answer is going to be that I should ask when setting up the appointment, but I don't know how to ask that question w/o being hung up on for unwise telephone talk.
Also, who in this area is full hour and who just hangs around for a cup of coffee?

my hours are NEVER a hour... they as other indies..usually run over and have 2nd and 3rds.... and sometimes with 5 minutes left in the hour they request a 3rd...what can you do except oblige....even if it is cutting it close:)
