I would let her know that people who get tested anonymously can obtain their result but their name is not on it, so therefore it could really be anyone's result. You can also obviously forge an HIV test result letter. You should advise her to use protection as often as she can. But always keep in mind, some people get more money for less latex.
Also, about HIV laying undetected inthe body, for 85% of people there is a 6 week window period (that means 6 weeks after contracting the virus it will show up on an HIV test) and the other 15% can take up to 3 months to test positive for the virus.
It is no longer years, but the only way you know if you have the virus is if you get tested. If you have any questions for me please e-mail me at

Hey everyone,
I am in Boston and I work at a free clinic that provides free and anonymous HIV counseling and testing, free STD screenings and free general care for people ages 13-29. We also have free safer sex supplies, which we all know are expensive. I know it is weird to read this in this forum but it is important to take care of yourself. Please e-mail me with any questions about free care, STD's or HIV. I hope to hear from you, take care.

I'd appreciate any hobbiest/provider views on this situation: Recently I stumbled across a provider who offers full service without a condom as long as you supply her with the results of a recent STD/HIV test. Personally, I would NEVER engage in hobby activities without protection, considering how the AIDS virus can lurk undetected for months. Does anyone else have an opinion they'd wish to share?

I would actually have second thoughts about covered with that one...is she a Boston regular?

Actually, she's visiting Western Mass. from St. Louis

There was a recent thread on this issue on TBD.  The question of whether HIV can lie undetected for months obviously hinges on the method of detection used.  In fact, there are several tests available; they differ in their detection capabilities (and price!).

The HIV PCR-DNA test is a relatively new test that offers improved detection capabilities relative to the more commonly used ELISA or Western Blot tests.  See http://public1.boards.bigdoggie.net/messageboards/boston/msgs/posts/33939.html for a discussion of this issue by a hobbyist who also happens to be a real doctor with some expertise in this area.  See http://aim-med.org/ for some background info on the PCR-DNA test and how to get tested.

The bottom line is that one can DECREASE the risks of unprotected sex dramatically with up-to-date PCR-DNA testing.  Obviously, "decreased risk" is still quite different from "no risk."  One's attitude toward risk is a very personal issue.

By the way, all of the doctors I know who are active hobbyists stress that Hepatitis B -- while not as deadly as HIV -- is a crippling disease that is far more contagious than HIV.  They all recommend that any regular hobbyist get the three-shot vaccination.  See http://www.hepfi.org/Hepinfo/grid.htm.

Have fun (safely), MG
