I remember going on a road trip from detroit to georgia with my grandpa and granma when I was 13 years old and my grandpa putting on this song with Ray Charles and that was the first time I'd ever heard Ray Charles
I remember when I was growing up, and my parents playing some of the old school music. One of my favorites (besides the gospel soul of Mahalia Jackson), was the late Ray Charles. His persona has always struck me, for he overcame many disabilities, and one of them, was being blind. Where ever you may be Ray, you will always be in our thoughts, and your music will always live on, and continue to open up doors, within every community.
Ray Charles' style was distinct. I will miss his voice and delivery. However, when I think of Ray Charles, my first thought shows what a great sense of humor that he had.
Back when the original cast was on Saturday Night Live, (for those who don't know what I'm talking about) back when Saturday Night Live was funny, Ray Charles guest hosted the show. One of the bits they did involved presenting Ray with a painting from the cast. They described this beautiful painting but they unveiled a blank canvas! Ray made some aside comment to the audience, basically saying that there were three black dudes waiting backstage to settle the score!
