and there aren't any real good hotels right in the area.
The closest I can think of is downtown, or over on Cambridge Street. There's also a boutique hotel or two in the area, but they aren't all that good for hobbying because they are small and quiet and traffic will stand out.
I'd rather go to the Copley Sq area, the theater district or the airport, for that matter.
boston is smal and the hill, west end, quincy market, etc are all really the same area.

I have stayed in the Copley/BackBay areas and know them well. It's just the rates are like never before. Even on the discount sites, averaging 400-500 a night. I found something quite nice in Beacon Hill area at a great price, hence the question on neighborhoods.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I will keep looking Any other ideas along the way are very welcomed!
You may be seeing higher rates because of the time of year. If you are looking at the 2nd week of October then that is the height of foliage season in this area.
I happened to think - late October is the Head of the Charles Regatta! This year it is Oct 22 and 23 - hotel rooms will be at a premium for about a week!
