Since we often have sports themed threads, I'd like to congratulate Jim Rice for finally and very belatedly being elected to the baseball hall of fame.
The most dominating hitter in baseball for 5 years.
To bad his numbers have to be compared to the recent obscene drugged up inflated numbers. People who never saw him play and only compared his numbers to current day, do not realize how dominating he was and how feared he was by American League pitchers.
Now, to fix another injustice. Get Pete Rose in there. He screwed up after his playing days were over, but if you ever wanted to show someone how the game should be played, they'd do all right by watching tapes of "Charlie Hustle"
i doubt that Ray Fosse thinks "Charlie Hustle" belongs in the Hall. One of the all-time douche bag moves that i have seen in sports, and that says a lot. Taking a guy out in friggin all star game. Ya, Pete played the game the right way.
Pete Rose is banned from the Hall for betting on baseball games, which included games involving the team he was coaching. Putting him in would be a travesty, and only earn $$ for Pete!
Jim Ed gets in! Great for the Sox and great for Jim Rice, a great player in his day and well deserved and long overdue honor.
Pete Rose deserves to be in period. The Manager that bet may be banned but the player with the most hit's of all time needs to be in. Pete is Sorry and did not ever bet against his team or throw a game. Betting for someone at that level is a sickness it is just as addictive as drugs and money obviously is not the motive..Pete needed to win and needed action. If they forgive druggies and drunks why not compulsive gamblers and while we are on the subject is ther any proof that shoeless Joe Jackson participated in the black sox scandel? his series statistics do not support that argument! of course he was against this but did not rat out his teammates so he stays out for 90+ years too. The politics of baseball sportswriters and mlb is still a good old boy network. I also need to let it be known that while Jim Ed Rice was out with a broken wrist in 1975 I was at game 7 against Pete Rose and the "big red machine" and I hated him for breaking my heart for the first of many times as a sox fan...to young to remember 67' but the man deserves his plaque in cooperstown.
Those my feelings exactly on Pete Rose. As for Ray Fosse, that was a terrible collision in a game that meant nothing, and ruined a great catchers career. But that was how Rose played, he played to win. And I'd guess he'd play that way if he was playing pick up basketball or marbles against his mother.
It's kind of ironic, that with the All Star game now deciding home field advantage for the World Series, if someone avoided a tag to decide the winner of the All Star game, he'd be looked on exactly the opposite.
No way do I honor Pete Rose as a great man, or humanitarian, but as a baseball player he was one of the best and so sould be honored.
Rose SHOULD be a Hall of Famer, but isn't HE the one keeping himself out? Didn't MLB make it known a few years ago, that if he admitted his wrongdoings and apologized, it would go a long way towards lifting the lifetime ban? It goes both ways. Cooperation is the key. He irritates MLB, shows up in Cooperstown uninvited to sign autographs, etc. He is arrogant about it, but unwilling to play the game outside the basepaths.
I truly think he could get in, if he played his politics a little bit better.
