An article about Asa Akira, a porn star here interviewed by NPR about her recently released memoir. Essentially she describes her background and how atypical it is of the common perception of those that work in the sex industry.
That common perception tends to jump to the conclusion that porn stars or providers are mostly broken people from poor backgrounds, doing what they do simply to feed a drug habit, or being manipulated by a pimp etc. Obviously, while certainly not a complete myth, it's not 100% true in all cases.
Akira's memoir seems to highlight that. She talks about how she came from a very good family, never had anything traumatic happen to her, but was just simply a highly sexual person, that was part of her identity. That drove her interest in - and love of - that industry.
Porn and hobbying are different, clearly, but there are some parallels.
Everyone - clients and providers - have their various reasons. Just like not every client is unattractive and can't get girls on their own, not every provider is a crack addict. But I think that's the outside perception that exists. Not that it matters I guess.
This was really the first thing I've seen to come out and publicly challenge that dogma. Not passing judgement on anyone's reasons for doing anything, just sometimes get aggravated when hearing these pigeonholing stereotypes brought up.
