...why prostitution is deemed illegal while the making of porn movies is not. I am sure this has been discussed in the past, but I can't recall any cogent reasons for this.

There are various threads on this if you do a search over on the legal board or even the porn star board but, to sum it up. The supreme court protects adult films under the constitution as freedom of expression. An adult film is art. It is acting and sex happens to be part of it. There are permits,licenses, employment and age verification records on file. Actors are being paid by a production company to appear in the film. Paid sex between two people obviously is none of those things except for the sex part.
