The "Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act," also known as the most dangerous--by which I mean endangering of the population they claim to be attempting to protect--piece of legislation in recent years goes to a vote today, Wednesday.
The best way to find out what happens next is to click the link below. It is a website compiled by the coalition of SWs fighting tooth and nail against this law, which will undoubtedly pass. If you're interested in justice for all of us, there will be action points posted. First and foremost: Call your senator, ask how they voted, and if they voted yes, tell them that, while the law may seem uncontroversial, based on knowledge that you have from people working with the affected and at-risk populations on the ground, this law is a complete disaster. Trafficking victims will become far less visible to law enforcement because of the loss of online platforms. There will be deaths. And that is on their head. And while it may seem uncontroversial to make laws to combat human trafficking, there has been so much press and lobbying against this bill that--this time, at least--a plea of ignorance will fall on deaf ears. And then vote for better people.
They intend to remove our safety net, sites like TER, sites like verifyhim.com, and all online infrastructure that allows the oldest profession to be safer for everyone. This law makes even our harm-reduction organizations, such as SWOP-USA, and locally, MASWAN, criminally liable. Don't worry, gents. We ladies will never disappear. But more of us will be raped, held at gunpoint, abused, and, ultimately, killed, because of this law, if it is implemented as written.
