I thought it was always pretty well known that the effects called morning sickness were a result of the fetus' draining resources from the mother-to-be, and nothing more. It's a sign of a healthy baby in most cases.
I have read that the reason for morning sickness is that in the very earliest stages of development the fetus is extremely vulnerable to substances ingested by the mother, so the queasiness and sensitivity is a means to discourage the mother from ingesting anything that might be harmful. After the first few months the fetus is robust enough to withstand the mother's eating a wider variety of foods. Just what I read, anayway.
