My girlfriend and I had the bitter-sweet experience of going to Disneyland (Los Angeles) when an earthquake had hit.  We had advance entry passes to get in hours before the general public.  The strange trifecta of an earthquake, being mid-January and people fearful to leave their homes/hotels left us to be some of maybe a dozen people total wandering the theme park early that morning.

We went from ride to ride - Space Mountain, Matterhorn, etc - only to find they were all shut down for inspection due to the quake.  It seemed like essentially every worker in Disneyland was off inspecting the thrill rides, meaning the ones that had the greatest chance of being dangerous had the quake damaged it in any way.

An hour had almost past before we found a ride running - Pirates of the Caribbean.  Mind you, this was 1994.  The new Johnny Depp movie was still 12 years away, and Disney animatronics were still Disney-cheezy.  "Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho, A pirates life for me!" we could hear being sung by machines inside.  It was like the place was running on auto-pilot.  We were about to leave but a guy walked out from behind an office door and said, "sorry, go ahead in, we're going crazy today inspecting everything. This is the only ride we've declared safe so far."  We got on the little boat, he pushed the button and away our ride went.  I looked back - it appeared he was leaving the entrance to the building... leaving us alone.

Santoriini is a Greek Island in the southern Aegean, quite a ways from the mainland, where I had the great pleasure of island-hopping with a very wonderful girl.
