When you see the little envelope next to a name, it means that the poster is NOT using an alias.

If the envelope does not appear, then the poster IS using an alias.

Note, the appearance of an envelope does not mean the the poster can receive PMs (i.e., is a VIP member.)

Other than to be told outright, there is no way to tell if a poster has PM privliges.
