Go to a farmer's market in the city.  There's a good one on Harrison Ave. in the South End, a few blocks in from Mass. Ave and Boston Medical Center.  There are a variety of food trucks, fresh produce, wines, crafts, etc.  People are friendly and it's easy to strike up a conversation.

I like the thinking cup cafe. There is one near boston common and one in the north end.
