lot of parents visiting colleges prior to start of school.

Most likely due to the Dermatology Conference in town this week.  It runs through Sunday.

Bad economy or not Boston actually has a shortage of rooms whenever there is a big conference in town. Rates are always at a a premium.

However, not my favorite skin trade.

Also,  August is the busiest tourist time for Boston.  Pretty much guaranteed good weather.  Hot and good.  Like you Brooke.

rates go up when the town is full and rooms are at a premium.

Hotels raise rates when they are more full. They know that vacancy will be low all around, so the demand for a room is higher. It's a tactic they use to make more money. Whenever there are big conventions or conferences in any particular area- you will probably notice an increase in hotel rates.

I'd recommend trying a travel site like hotwire or priceline to book your rooms. It makes a considerable difference.

Be safe regardless,

Sasha
