Curtesy is great and yes it is nice to get a heads up from a client.  However, if I get an email request I respond promptly.  THE END  If it isn't a local provider, I will email the client and ask if he is requesting a reference and if it is ok to give one.  I know very well what Linda is speaking of as I have heard stories from a few of my clients.  In my opinion, and it's not worth much if someone is that insecure that they can't give a reference they shouldn't be in this business.  Lastly, a client under no circumstances should be threatened by a provider.  If someone is truly a danger and I repeat the word danger, not just someone that pisses you off or doesn't feel comfortable verifying, then and only then I believe you should backchannel with other local providers to ensure their safety. Ladies lets be professional.
