As soon as you see each other or wait and work up to it?

If only an hour or two, I'd keep the preliminaries to a minimum, but if a dinner date or overnight, then there is no rush.  Time for a chat and a drink is nice

I prefer some warm up chit chat first but it also depends on the length (i rarely have gone past a 60 min date) and if I've seen her before.  It's all about the connection.

If we have a longer date then I would much prefer some preliminary banter. It makes everything better for me if we move at a more natural pace.
