Before the web I used to pick up the Phoenix just for the alt lifestyle ads. Some of the ads read like penthouse forum. I remember calling one and the answering machine message was the raunchiest mix of lust and pain sounds followed by a simple "leave your number and I will get back to you."
I thought the Phoenix and Eros wre connected? Eros seemed like the likely offshoot of the alt ads from the Phoenix.
For me, someone who's been around longer than I care to admit, the Boston Phoenix was the first and for the most part, most reliable place to find risqué and illicit classifieds.
Even the first to have Escort adds.
Another oldie but good falls to the power of the internet.
PS. I do mean the "find a ho" comment to be in jest if not a reverent reference to our Lady friends out there. Not a derogatory comment.
Ahh The Phoenix I remember it well. I would spend every Monday morning trying to write clever ads that would catch gentlemen s attention. " Got Milk?" for Dolly the woman who could lactate, "Big Red" for Patty the tall red-head and of course Ho Ho Ho for the Christmas ad lol. I had off Thursdays so I could drive down to the Fenway to pay for the weekly ads. Believe it or not I still have quite a few regulars clients who first found us through the Phoenix, even way back in the day before we changed the name to Room Service Girls. We were Elegant Escorts back then lol.
Its kind of sad to think what was such a staple in our little world has now become obsolete.
They used to call me every couple of months trying to get me advertise with them, but it just didn't seem worth it to me these days. I used to tell them to give me a week for free, and if I got enough business I'd advertise with them, but they wouldn't go for it. My partner told me that 10 to 15 years ago they were the main place to advertise, but they just didn't seem to keep up with the times in my opinion. It just shows how fluid this business is, and how we need to keep up with technology to succeed.
When I came to boston 20 years ago, thats where I found my first Boston "HO", and so my New England hobby career began with the Phoenix. I met some great ladies out of that paper. Sad to see it go.
First one was an ad . it read "looking for massage...." turns out the guy is amazingly hot. I think he may have really meant to say he was lookin for amassage n a hand job. Then I also found alot of free lance "modeling jobs" which alot times turned out they were lookin to hook up . too bad we will miss the phoenix. Good memories.
