Maine woman accused of promoting prostitution on the Web

DOVER, N.H. -- A mother of two from Lebanon, Maine, has been released on $5,000 bail after being charged with violating probation by using an Internet site to promote prostitution.

[edited by moderator], 26, appeared Monday in Strafford County Superior Court to face the probation violation charge in connection with her June arrest for prostitution following a police sting at a motel in Biddeford, Maine.

After receiving a tip about a Web site that allegedly advertised [edited] services as a "paid companion," police in Biddeford arranged a meeting between [edited] and a detective who posed as a potential customer.

The Web site featured nude photos of [edited] and an e-mail address where she could be reached, according to police.

[Edited] was charged with engaging in prostitution, which is punishable by up to five years in prison, and promoting prostitution, which carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail.

Biddeford police also charged [edited] with operating after suspension.

According to a statement on file in Strafford County, probation officer Robert Meegan wrote that [edited] and her husband, [edited], 24, of Biddeford, admitted in a June 30 police report to their part in the prostitution business.

[Edited] was also charged with promoting prostitution, said JoAnne Fisk, spokeswoman for the Biddeford Police Department.
