1. A four hour dinner date has been made with a provider whom I have seen previously. 2. Two tickets sudenly become available for a Red Sox game that afternoon. 3. Providr has previously mentioned a desire to see Fenway Park and has never been to a big league game.
If provider accepts invitation to go to the game, should it be on or off the clock or at some other rate? My budget cannot afford an additional three-four hours. Providers and hobbyists, please advise. Is there a right answer?
In my opinion she should not charge you any more. The original date was for dinner, two hours, then fun for two hours. Correct? So she wants to see Fenway then forget dinner, go to the game then have two hours of fun. This is only fair to you because the tickets have to be at least 120 face value for the pair.
What is "right" depends only on how you and she view the situation. Clearly, you would not ask her if it were to be "on the clock." So that choice is out. This really leaves you two choices...
You can not ask her at all, which relieves you of having to confront the issue, but fails to provide the opportunity for the two of you to partake in a mutually enjoyable experience.
Or you can ask her, making it clear that you could not afford to treat her to the game on the clock, and therefore that the offer is contingent on it being off the clock. She will either say yes or no.
But this may not be as simple as it sounds... Depending on the lady and the nature of your relationship, there could be some downside risk to asking. Even if she says yes, there is the possibility that she does so because she feels some implicit pressure to say yes. If she's got a passive-aggressive streak, this could negatively color the dinner date...
And if she says no, she may be miffed that you would even dare to suggest time off the clock. This would not be an auspicious start to a dinner date, either...
Personally, I'd probably ask her. In my experience, it's far more frequent that I regret the things I didn't do than I regret those things I did...
If you pay for her to watch the game your nuts it might even make you hate the red sox thats my opinion. if she doesnt want to go for the original amount you agreed on reschedule for another time. Enjoy the game!
Another tactful option is to ask her if your previously agreed 4-hour dinner date can start AFTER the game since you will be together anyway? Might be a way to establish dialogue without appearing to be a George Costanza and who knows, maybe dinner can be in the form of room service and you can really have a fun 4 hours
