Having read Madison's posts, I feel that we need to have a brief discussion on decorum surrounding cancellations during this time of year. My profession affords me the opportunity to witness first hand the devastating effects of this flu season. I've been in my job for nearly 20 years, and this is about as bad as I've seen.
I've been in the hobby over 10 years. I know all about the anticipation of that next appointment, especially if, like me, you set up the appointment several days in advance. Everything is set, screening passed, all that's left is that all important face to face meeting. Then it hits you; that sudden realization of "I think I'm coming down with something." What to do? ''
In civvie life, the choice is easy, cancel. However, in TER life, there are other considerations; fees from the provider, fear of being black-listed, not knowing when/if rescheduling is possible, getting a bad review, being thought a liar, etc. So, you decide to keep the appointment. There are many thought processes here, aside from the previous fears.
Unfortunately, a lot of people may think it's no big deal to spread what you have, b/c it's a one time only meeting, and you will never see the person again. I am here to implore everyone, clients and providers, to cancel your appointment if you are, or even think you are, ill. It can take 3-5 days for a virus to propagate, so you may be fine when you set up the appointment, and by the time the appointment rolls around, you are ill.
Please, let's have a little understanding if a client, or provider, wishes to cancel last minute. I'm not saying make it a habit, but give the benefit of the doubt, at least once, If client/provider says they are ill. Waive any fees, withhold threats of a bad review, and just say, "I understand. Thank you for taking me into consideration. Of course I would love to see you when you are better."
Lots of us on both sides of the hobby have families. So, it's not just one person's health we're talking about, it could be many. This flu season is horrendous, not going to sugarcoat it. People are dying. How would you feel if you made an entire family ill just because of some selfish reason? It's not worth it. You can reschedule. Simple consideration for someone else's health, that's all I ask.
Anyway, I'm stepping off my soapbox now. Have fun and stay safe, happy, and healthy everyone!
