I've heard others complain about "inflated scores" on TER, and have wondered myself about how some ratings have occurred.  There are two quick and simple answers.  First, guys are, for whatever reasons, simply inflating their scores.  The other is that everything is subjective and there are "honest" disagreements as to how a meeting should be rated.
I posit a third possibility, I wonder what you think about it.
When a I started this a few years ago, a lot of it was hit or miss.  Even with "research" I often didn't really know what to look for.  But with time, and experience, my research now leads me to have, on average, much more enjoyable meetings than in the past.  I know what I'm looking for, and I'm able to find it more often than in the past.
I know who's reviews I rely on, and who's I shouldn't.  etc.  There are some guys who have taste similar to mine.  So if they give a good rating, I tend to know what to expect.
So, my avg ratings have climbed too.
Every once in a while I do a reset.  What is now an 8 might have at one time been a 9.  And some of the 9's I've had I figured would be once in a life time experiences--but thank goodness they weren't!!  I'd go on to have one even better just months later.
I wish there was way to go back and re rate some earlier experiences.  Its like grading a stack of papers. How do you know what the real A's B's C's and Ds are until you've read them all?
So, maybe some the grade inflation is due to this?

Each experience is radically different for me because each girl is different and experiences differ with each guy....I have seen providers guys rated a 9 or 10 that I wouldn't give a 7 or 8 and the same goes with performance...I select my providers off of my own criteria and expectations....if she puts an effort into the date....hair, make up, mani/pedi and wardrobe request is fulfilled, I rarely ever give a provider below an 8 because she worked to make herself up and put thought and effort into our date.  When it comes to performance, I know from reviews and communication before the appt if she can fulfill what my desires are and unless she just lays there she never gets below an 8....most of my ladies come from a certain agency because the owner knows my preferences and has an amazing amount of talent there.  Most of the ladies in Atlanta take pride in their work and appearance and we should all be thankful with the endless supply of top talent that is right here in our backyard.... Treat these ladies well and the skies the limit for what you receive in return!  Happy Hobbying!

I have had some first encounters that didn't live up to expectations only
to have subsequent visits that were off the charts fun.  Only took the chance  
on a hunch but it works out if you trust your gut.

Like you said, you have to trust your gut. I'd add that

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.  

So there's some ppl skilz needed. If a gal doesn't have a good wit (or an absolutely toe curling fantastic BBBJ), she doesn't get a second visit from me.
