So, I'm a big language person, and love the nuances of diction.

"Slut" can be used either pejoratively or affectionately.  

Sorority girls, for example, might refer to a "non-sister" wearing a short skirt and being sexy at a party as a "slut", and the intent in strictly pejorative (I just happened to review an article on class consciousness and slut-shaming in the collegiate setting, so the example sticks out in my mind).

On the other hand, my ATF was out of town (visiting California) for two, and when we came back her pussy was sore - she'd fucked three men. When she commented that "yes, I didn't expect them to come over all at once" I realized she'd fucked all three of them *at the same time*. Amused and impressed, I said "you are such a slut!" - in this case (we being fellow-freaks), the term was affectionate.

That said, a slut in simply so comfortable with her sexuality that she doesn't hide it; some prostitutes are sluts, but most aren't, and most sluts aren't prostitutes: it's the difference between a proclivity and a profession.

"Whore", on the other hand, is really strictly pejorative. I suppose at times it can be said psychodramatically (I've pinned the aforementioned ATF to the bed, fucking the sense out of her, all the while telling her what a whore she is as a mode of agreed-upon psychodrama), but it's pretty hard to find a kindly or affectionate use for the word. Its distinct intent is linguistic power-asymmetry, to demote women who price their virtue (ie. prostitutes). All prostitutes are whores (by definition), but not all whores are prostitutes, since there are other kinds of "currency" than cash which can be used to part the legs of the willing (drugs, for example, as in a "coke whore" - very 80s, I know).

Personally, I've always appreciated women of negotiable virtue...
