I got the SPYWARE program two days ago and it was advertised as being FREE. After you have it scan your computer and you click on the button to erase the cookies etc, it takes you to an order form , from which you may order the program.... THAT DOESN'T SOUND FREE TO ME !!!

We all remember the warnings such as needles hidden in movie theater seats which were spreading HIV. If I give you a warning, it's a real one! A couple of years ago, shortly after I started at TER, the Klez worm was making the rounds. People on TER and TBD Boston were accusing each other of maliciously spreading the virus. A similar worm is now making the rounds. It spreads itself from an infected computer by accessing the victims address book. For instance, if the virus was on my computer, it would take two email addresses from my address book and send the virus to one of these addresses while addressing the email from the other victim. The person who you receive this email from may not actually have the virus on their computer. Before everyone starts blaming others, I wanted to share the information page from Norton Antivirus (Symantec).

Thank you Thirsty for putting things into perspective. I was quietly running down under my breathe an email buddy today for sending that gosh darn virus.

This worm has another potential problem, it seems that it has a keystroke recorder...that is it will record all the keystrokes that you make and then send out that information at some later time.  This can reveal information like credit card, user names and passwords as well as which website they are used for, or any information which you would enter into your computer.

For that matter, you probably already have software installed without your knowledge on your computer which is potentially stealing information.  You can check to see free by going to the url link below.  I use spybot about once a week.  If you use hotbar, do not delete it using spybot if you want to continue using it.

O2, you can download both/either "Spybot", and "Ad-aware 6.0" off the internet, and BOTH are FREE (or at least they were where I found them), they do exactly the same thing, delete the exact same files, etc.  They have upgrades you can order, but the basic programming is free.  I prefer adaware as it runs faster on my pc, but even a slower Spybot only takes 2.5 minutes to run.

You may see an email, or a pop up saying they have FOUND spy s/w on your pc.  It doesn't necessarily mean they HAVE found something, they are assuming that you will prove PT Barnum to be correct...

Using these, and a good vuris program (even somuch as to scan every day if you are on often enough) should do you just fine...

BTW - who is your ISP? (Some do better than others in terms of protecting you.)
