BTW I am also from California, I too am not white, I have lived in the south for decades and have found ugly incidents of overt racism are growing more and more rare down here. I hope this will be your only experience like it while you are here.

I grew up in a family that was fairly racist. Not in an obnoxious physically harmful way, but I certainloy heard the references frequently. And it wasn't just prejudice against African-Americans, the prejudices included Jewish people, Catholics, Irish, etc. Basically anything that wasn't German, British or Scots. It didn't help that I lived in an area where those groupd made up 99% of the population.

But then I found myself in the military and right from the start I found myself in the midst of diversity and over the years I have lived around the world exposed to all sorts of differnt people.

As a hobbiest I have often spent time with providers that are not caucasian. In the end I find that it is the personalty of the individual themselves whether I enjoy being with them and their skin color or ethnicity doesn't even enter the equation. As long as the provider at least makes some effort to be friendly and accomodating, then I simply don't care about the other stuff. Perhaps I'm an idealist with tunnel-vision, but I hope the day comes when no one in the world cares about skin color and ethnicity when dealing with other people and at the same time respect who they are and what their background is. At the same time, there are enough problems that both providers and hobbyists face in the hobby, we don't need the type of thing you describe on top of it.

I am a "colorful" person (in every sense of the word ) but I have hardly any racist experiences down here in the South. May be once or twice. Even those were not very pronounced and I don't think even those people were bad.
In my cases, people who said racist things just blurted out of habit. It is like behavior that they can't control. Just something hard-wired in their brains that they can't do anything about. You know, if you are brought up in an environment that is overwhelmingly bigoted, you can't expect people to change all of a sudden.
I am not justifying anything that happened to you neither do I ask you to sympathize with the a**hole that did that to you. Just stating about my own experiences.

I would not judge a section of the country either west or south by what the news media has portrayed or from just a few people to the extreme left or right which you may have met. We are all the targets of other people's stereotypes and prejudices. We are stereotyped and treated differently based on how we look, how we talk, where we come from, especially what we do. When one black lady was telling me about something, saying, "People like you usually...." I was thinking what does she mean by "people like me," Russian? Whites? What else am I missing?... I agree with you, this racist crap has to go!!! Blacklist that ***мудак*** [Russian bad word] Whitey for sure. There are many good men out there.

It happens, wish to god it did not. I hope one day it will stop. I am so sorry it happened to you, my son just made me a grandfather with his black wife and I am happy. It cost me my relationship with a beutiful on the outside young lady, but some things are hidden until you put fire to it. When you leave at that, the problem goes away. Only thing one can do is rise above it. Ignorance is very hard to erase when someone reaches certain age.

Vonnie sorry you had to be exposed to that.  You can't change how people view the world but you can control who you see...there are more of us "good" guys out here than bad ones so hopefully you will only have good experiences going forward!

It's been a while, so I guess we were past due for this. Race and BBFS all in one. You should have split them up and had two more dramafests to add to your other one from a few months back.

California has the largest number of of racists groups ( over 100 according to the FBI) ; white, black, yellow and brown than any other state in the union.

California has more racist skinhead groups than any other state. Guess which states are 2,3 and 4 ? Arizona, Oregon and Washington.


Oh and where were the Black Panthers founded ? Yep, Oakland, California !
