Just went from the 3Gs to the 4 and I like the camera flash that can be a flashlight over any other change.  Hate the new feel, it's like a brick.  It's a love / hate relationship because of the AppleNazi way they are so good at taking your money.  Long live OpenSource!

My contract with ATT is set to expire, and I'm in the market for a new phone.  Lots of tech savvy people around here, and I wanted to get some opinions.

I fell in love with my iPhone.... when I first got it.  Now, I've grown to hate it.  The new O\S I put on it has slowed performance by at least 50%.  I've begun to feel cheated on my internet experience due to the limitations of Safari.  The iPhone 4 sounds cool, but I don't want to plunk down $200, reup my contract and not be able to view Flash videos for 2 years.  Plus, I'm not thrilled with ATT's coverage.

I've been leaning towards Sprint EVO 4g.  Anybody have any thoughts on it?  Pricing's good, phone is same price as iPhone 4 and runs flash through Google Android OS.  I had Sprint a long time ago, and it worked great, but I hear now they have network problems like ATT.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have had an EVO since it came out and was my first true smart phone.  I love this phone and the Android OS.  I've never liked the iPhones because I don't like the fact that Steve Jobs wants to dictate how I use the phone.  With EVO or any Android phone, I can customize screen layouts, install any applications without have to go through the Apple Gestapo, etc.    If you're a heavy google user (gmail, google calednar/talk/calendar) the Android OS integration is seamless.    Also, I love playing HD quality video from Youtube and seeing peoples jaws drop...

With a good 4G signal; I'm getting 12Mbit down and 2 Mbit up, but that's usually outdoors.

I highly recommend the EVO. I believe Sprint is still doing the 30 day no questions ask return policy; so you have nothing to lose.

Also, Sprint has the best unlimited voice/text/data plan.  ATT and Verizon have dumped their unlimited plans because they know that usage will only go up.

You can do a side by side comparison inside the Sprint Store between the HTC EVO and the Samsung Epic..

The Epic WINS hands down...

No worries with Flash
Connects up to 5 wi-fi devices as a mobile hotspot
Slide out full QWERTY Keyboard..

I have problems with my yahoo email accounts going through since yahoo doesn't use POP3/Imap so you have to go to yahoo.com and pull up your mail from there.  There is a yahoo app but it can only be used for one account right now.

Sprint's Plan is also way less expensive:
$99.99 Simply Everything~~~~~~  Unlimited EVERYTHING!!!!! LOL

hahahahaha....  I'm totally sounding like a sprint salesperson, lmao...

Say no to the EVO... Get the Epic!!!

love ya!!

You've got three major players:  AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.  I'm looking at new phones right now as well, so I don't know much about the phones, but I do know some things about the provider's coverage.

AT&T - personally, I dislike AT&T.  The reasons are career related, and the fact that you can only get your iphone services at an apple store does have its limitations.  I do know AT&T has had some network outages.  Prior to the SBC buyout of AT&T (but keeping the AT&T name, I know the overall philisophy in the company was to do as little as possible to keep their network coverage up to date).

Verizon - I've had them for years and I've never had a problem, and in all my travels around the US, I've never had a problem with them.  They do have a pretty extensive network.  If you do a lot of traveling in the US, you should have good results with Verizon.

Sprint - Sprint bases their network coverage on the US Interstate system.  As a rule, if you live relatively close to a major highway, you should have coverage.  If you do not, then you may not have as good coverage.  Some time ago, Sprint was at the bottom of the pack, and losing customers quickly.  Sprint listened, and started to improve.  Sprint's customer service is improving, and thier subscriber base is going.  I do not have Sprint, but have friends that do, and have commented that they do enjoy it. (although a fair amount of my friends with Sprint do not do a lot of traveling).

Not sure if that helps you any further, trying to keep an even bias here.  You might try googling "Yankee telecom reports" and see what you get.

Had the iPhone 3g, and saw the same thing with the OS upgrade.  Went to the new 4, and speed issues went away.  It's a nicer version of the old phone, so you'll like the things you liked before and hate the things that you used to hate (other than the speed of course)

I work for Sprint, and I would love to take you on a sales call, and let you give that pitch.

A bi-sexual girl who doesn't wear panties would probably sell a lot more phones.

As for phones I recently got my son the epic mentioned earlier and although I am a blackberry fan I really like a lot of the features on the epic so I am gonna switch soon.Just my two cents

iPhone 4 is the version of the iPhone...  It is not a 4G phone.

AT&T does not have 4G coverage.  Sprint is the only carrier to offer the 4G network right now.

Sprint is only 4G company rite now. Had good experience with my EVO and wife loves her Epic. iPhone version 4 is still 3G much slower.  4G comes in very handy when a date no shows and you must look up another on the fly.

Other than the marketing hype put out by phone companies.

We have Sprint 4G

We have Verizon 4G claim

AT&T no 4G claim thus far

Which one rally has 4G?

Any of you done a speed test or all of it based on perception of speed and sales person doing good job?

I have not been able to determine any speed advantage and I have downloaded and uploaded same stuff simultaneously from the same location with my buddies and none of us could see significant difference between any of them. Indeed, Spring 4G has speed advantage because of WiMax technology but coverage very spotty and the phone switches to 3G.

WiMax very very spotty in Atlanta itself don't expect coverage in may cities including New York, LA, etc. It all seem like Direct TV vs. Dish Network to me, selling channels you have no interest is watching, but making you pay for it.

Bottom line, analyze what and how you use the phone and decide. On the other hand, you want a status symbol then pick which fringe group you want to join and start arguing between Droid and iPhone. You can also join Steve Jobs is control freak vs. Google doesn't respect privacy argument and go on forever.

By the way I an assuming that you are old enough and mature enough to understand a stupid argument when you see one.

It's all hype by the marketeers. 4G by definition would include 100Mbps while stationary. It's like a provider bolting on some new tits and saying her service is improved. No, that's not right... It's more like lipstick on a pig.

The same is true of 3G. The unfortunate reality is that the service and speeds vary more by geography than anything else.

Personally, I think we need 4G like we need an STD outbreak here... however, I am a bit of a luddite (albeit with a 3G web enabled device and working in the tech sector - LOL)...

You'll be better off assessing your real needs rather than buying the latest and greatest toy that doesn't do what you need (who knows how long before Apple includes flash - which I dislike, but it's ubiquitous), just so that you can show off your new toy.
