Dammit... I did it again, I hit the enter before I typed the message.
Regardless, the "Dose of Reality" post isn't quite accurate. That treatise was an excerpt from Charles Sykes' book, "The Dumbing Down of Our Kids", written in 1995.
The rules are self explanatory but the book is a "must read" if you're at all interested in education or lack thereof in public schools.
Martin Gross, another expert who is critical of public and, in some cases, private education, makes the same observation. He goes further to explain that even colleges, private ones, once thought to be bastions of erudition and education have fallen terribly and many of them aren't even good schools anymore.
Students can obtain degrees from universities without having the slightest knowledge of fundamental English, mathematics, history or geography.
Everyone is told to go to college but the fact of the matter is that few are prepared to attend college. Instead of the students preparing for college, the colleges lower their standards and admit students who have no business having a high school diploma, let alone a letter of admission to college.
We've made the mistake of instilling the message that college is the sole route to success. There is nothing wrong with trade schools, the military or even manual labor. The idea that college is for everyone is total nonsense.
Anyway, enough from me. I just thought I'd chime in and credit the proper source for that writing.
PLEASE be careful before you go here. I agreed with another post (by Brooke Butler) a day or so ago, and I was saying esentially the same thing, and have been getting clobbered for it ever since...
There must be some "educated" people on here who seem to have a chip on their shoulder.
I KNOW how to spell, the misspelling was only a typographical error, a mere slip of a finger. Posting on this board can be kind of touchy. DON'T hit your enter key until you are sure you have typed what you want, and you have spelled it correctly. I see posts being "modified" but I surely don't know how to do it...
Did you mean to post this on the other "reality" thread? You and I are the only ones talking on this one so I'm assuming someone got sensitive about a typo. It wasn't me, I've been hitting the wrong keys all day long so I sympathize.

Oh, btw - it's something they taught us in college.
Sweetandstiff, I've done the same thing as you, that is, hitting the enter button by accident. I would think that TER tech. staff could remedy that with a line of code!!! Your comments on dumbing down are quite accurate. Over the years, the SAT scores have declined to such an extent that the passing grades were decreased so that the kids could get high enough scores to humor the various boards of education, the state dept. of education, and make the DC people think that their education programs have been successful. Ho,Ho,Ho. "We shall leave no child behind". Another HO,Ho,Ho. This is a very sad situation. In SC, a large number of secondary school teachers were unable to pass the exams that the students were expected to pass. I'm afraid that there is no simple solution. Has anyone noticed that what were considered four-year colleges 30 years ago, are now called "Universities" !!!! God help us!! I won't be around in another 30 years, but at this rate of education decay, elementary schools will be called colleges. Just how do we restore the education system that we had 60 years ago???
