Grew up on Hickory House BBQ. They are down to one location on LaVista Road in Tucker, so I stop by whenever I am in the area. Their brunswick stew is top shelf!
Bubba-Q is one of my favorites. The Bubba Chong is a redneck take on a chimichanga. Pork wrapped in a tortilla, deep fried then covered with cheese and their damn good Brunswick stew. The stuffed peppers are also “jam-the-box”!
I am a certified bbq judge, it is just a hobby, but a lot of the contests will have more than 50k in prize money, so it can be a big deal. With that said, most restaurants do not have competition quality bbq.
Righteous q is in the Marietta area, near sprayberry high school, it is one of the best bbq restaurants around. It is in a strip mall and is very unassuming however it is worthwhile. Banana pudding there is awesome too, pro tip on the pudding, get a pan instead of a single serving.
Another favorite of mine is in the Canton area called Old Country Place. Great fresh pork rinds for appetizer, pulled pork and brisket are on point too. Also they have a fairly extensive bourbon selection at fair and reasonable prices
usually that is not BBQ.... My neighbor from New York invited me over for BBQ.... he had hot dogs and hamburgers on a gas grill lol... certainly not BBQ. That said you do get some great food in gas station parking lots, there used to be a taco stand on Bells Ferry that was incredible
Google the Georgia Barbecue Association.... they teach a judging class for maybe 50 bucks, then you eat and judge some BBQ. Takes about half a Saturday. Then you are a trained judge, after judging a while you are a certified judge, then after a few years you can be a master judge. They email when competitions are open for judging, about 35 weekends a year, you sign up to judge and they let you know the specifics. On Friday night before competition the cook teams feed all the volunteers and judges if you want to go, usually the beer sponsor taps a few kegs also.... so food and beer free of charge. Then Saturday morning you start judging what I promise is the best BBQ you will ever taste. It is kinda like a blowjob.... even the bad ones are pretty damn good. Just an idea if you are interested.
