I am an avid listener of NPR and this morning they featured a story on the comfort women of WWII which I found very moving and poignant. Comfort stations were organized by Japan in WWII in many of the countries occupied by the Japanese military during the war. Recently Japan has sought to make amends by paying South Korea 1 billion yen ($8.3 mil US) for kidnapping and forcing thousands of Korea women into sex slavery. Today, 46 Korean women remain alive many of whom participated in a book written about their servitude.

There have been a great many books over the topic of women who worked forced and willingly as "Comfort Women" during various wars in many countries. Being that I am a lover of books and epic stories, guys and girls of Atlanta TER what are some that you have read or heard about?

a 2000 documentary, hard to find but I have seen it with subtitles. Quite graphic in its depictions of what these women went through. The Japanese were not the honorable Samurai we have seen in pop culture. WWII Japanese valued non-Japanese as subhumans. The US victory and MacArthur's re-building and reshaping of Japan has greatly helped change things.

I also found a YouTube on the subject.

There is Sex Work and Sex Slavery same as any other industry.

Great! The information you provided will aid me in my research over the topic for a blog post and several podcasts. It is a sad fact of humanity that especially during times of war many boys, girls and women are kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery. I believe that as long as humankind is present on the earth, such things will exist there will always be an underground sex trade.

I will definitely check out the link!

Good information on the subject.  There have been camp followers since the beginning of time, but most of the women probably received some compensation from the soldiers and they were willing participants. The Japanese treatment of the Korean women was the most atrocious of modern times. There are several books written about their murder of The Chineese by the Japanese during WW2 that even the Germans felt was in humane.

Yes, I have been reading these types of reports for quite some time now concerning ISIL. Boko-Haram does the same although much less publicized.

Whenever I travel abroad to the developing world, I always worry about something terrible like this happening. I have plans to travel to Kenya late 2016/early 2017 and in Dadaab there has been a long standing refugee camp there where aid workers have been killed and have disappeared. It's hard to do good work in this world for the people who need it most.

One thing that always got lost in my HS and college US History courses was the simple fact that Europeans got the majority of their new slaves in west Africa from Muslim traders. The slave trade has been justified for religious reasons on many fronts. Yet, upon reflection, it always seemed these history course were trying to shame me for something that my ancestors might have done.
I say 'might have' as all my family research shows we were relatively poor, moonshine making hillbillies dodging 'revenuers'... same as today - minus most of the moonshine.

So it comes as little surprise that this recent ISIS fatwa was issued. Parts of it sound compassionate, but the simple fact that there is 'captive' repeatedly used makes me angry.

Love your attitude Alex but (for me) there's plenty of charitable work to be done at home, but I am certain you do your part any way you can , any where you are - you just seem to be the type.

Have fun, play safe.

Helping people is commendable.     If you are killed or harmed overseas you can help no more.   If you help those in need in your own environment you will live to help again.    I give $ 2000 to a little country church and have every year since 09 and my wife passed.    It's not much but is a lot to the church.  I some times help people in need along the way young mother's with too many kids, widows and divorced women always are having problems.  I don't have a lot of money but a little goes a long way for some one in need when their on the bottom.    Most of the people I met on here are helping someone.  You sound like a really nice person for thinking of helping others like you are.  Alex my hat's off to you and everyone that's doing their part.

Indeed there is plenty of charitable work to be done here in the US and I do my share, however; upon completion of my Masters it has always been a dream of mine to work abroad on global and environmental health issues. We are all one big global family and we must help each other be that in our own back yard or overseas

Not charged for any war crimes against the Asian nations as they were only charged for their crimes against the U.S. And it's Caucasian allies. The prevailing theory at the time was that it was not worth the effort to pursue justice for the Asians as their lives were not worth as much as Caucasians.  This is not my belief but is just history from our fore fathers.
