I joined up for one of "those" tours to Thailand in 1990, thru an ad in the L.A.Weekly. It was a group from Orange County, Ca. that was starting up at the time. The guy who ran it had done his first two week tour a couple of months before with 3 guys, and this was his second go round. We had 5 guys in all, 4 from the east coast, and myself from So. Cal. He was a fan of travel to Thailand and Manila, and wanted to get his trip free by taking others and working out deals for hotels, transportation and such. It was actually a positive experience, since everything ran smoothly and the hotel was great. However, I went back twice on my own, since once I was there, it was pretty clear that you can navigate everything just fine, and they do treat Americans rather well. You also have the freedom to do what you want. If you've never been there, it's not a bad idea to go escorted in some way, then go back on your own to really enjoy some freedom.
In 1996, I just took a flight to Bangkock stayed there on and of for two weeks and treked by myself through Northern Thailand.. It was my first time there, I didn't speak Thai, didn't eat spicy foods. Bankock was easy to find English speakers, in fact they search you out. I saw some amazing things I never would with a tour. An old man who wrapped his hair around his torso and then carried the last part of it like a toga--he had never cut his hair. There was a young boy who road his elephant on the streets one night and walked up on Pat Pong the night time outdoor flea market looking shopping alley.
