That even though the entire state of Alabama is supposed to be on central time, several of the cities right on the Georgia border go by eastern time.  

The following cities go by eastern time although the rest of Alabama is on central time.  
Phenix City
Salem
Smith's Station
Valley
Lafayette (pronounced Lafette the y is silent)
Lanett

When I first moved to one of the above cities in AL and after being either an hour early or late for various meetings and functions, I began to always clarify Eastern or Central time.  I had several older people look at me kind of funny and say, "ohhhh you mean fast time or slow time?"  I'm like huh?  Then they explained that the older generation referred to Georgia time (eastern time) as fast time, and Alabama time (central time) as slow time.  

For example, the city I live in is eastern time but my son's high school is on central time.  For any kind of civilized shopping or dining, you have to journey to Opelika or Auburn which are on central time; or Columbus GA on eastern time.
So I have to have 2 time zones going on in my head at all times.  

So if your traveling to any of these areas in Alabama so you won't be late or early, that's the scoop.  
You gotta love Alabama.

I do love visiting the sandbar in the summertime, but living on the river is damn cold this time of year!  Aiiiiieeeeeee

LOL, it kind of works in my favor because I always tend to run late and since I live on eastern time, I usually have an extra hour to get there!
