Common headaches are due to muscles, nerves and blood vessels around the head, face and neck. Not really brain related.
Not sure where that remark came from, but
1. The brain has no* pain sensors, so headache pain is never* actually located within the brain
2. The brain covering outside that barrier, and the scalp, are highly* sensitive to pain
3. As was mentioned, muscles and vasculature around the face and neck often contribute to headache pain
4. Pain can "radiate" and be perceived at some distance from the location of the injury that causes the pain -- even, indeed, in body parts that are no longer present ("phantom limb pain" etc.).
5. There is a pretty strong "blood-brain barrier" that prevents most molecules from entering (including medicines we would like to get inside!)
6. Because of (5) there can be bad chemistry happening all over the surface of the brain covering that never gets inside to affect the brain itself.
So just because headaches are perceptually located in or near the brain, it does not seem to follow that the brain is necessarily affected or involved.
Is there another line of reasoning for that connection? I'd be interested in understanding it. Thanks.
