I think its a combination of both the cycle shift as well as the changing dynamic in the way music is produced and distributed.

When the Beatles produced Sgt Pepper, they took months in the studio using a 4 channel reel to reel tape recorder.
When Grandmaster Flash produced White Lines, it took 2 weeks to produce and master in the studio using some very sophisticated and expensive synthesizers. Todays technology gives anyone the ability to produce and distribute the most sophisticated melodies and rhythms in a matter of hours.
It has made it possible for many very talented people to get their audio artwork out there. Its also given many untalented buffoons the ability to flood the world wih garbage.
I expect we will see a slow shift to new forms of electronic music and artistry, and an increase in the variations and methods by which the new generation pays homage to the old by sampling and reworking the classics.

Sales, new acts down in the world of hip-hop.

Is this good news for the culture warriors?  Or just a cyclical downturn which ought to be expected from time to time?
