Great news for the (on average) 66 GIs and 1,223 Iraqis killed each month. That is One Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Three Iraqis and Sixty Six Americans. It does NOT include casualties, those maimed for life both US military and Iraqi security forces and civilians.
Let's not forget something - there is NO reason for us to have gone there in the first place. We are there because George W Bush and Richard Cheney decided that we should go there and made up false intelligence to get the backing of the Congress and the American people. They lied and thousands of people have died unnecessarily.
Now we have dickheads like you rabbiting on about how since we;re there we have to 'finish the job'. Fuck the 'job'. You don't even know what 'the job' is, it changes every month. And every month over one thousand human beings die and thousands more are maimed.
Report THAT, asshole. Great news, ain't it?

US reports ‘phenomenal’ drop in Iraq violence
By Stephen Fidler in London and Demetri Sevastopulo in Australia

Violence in Iraq has fallen at a rate that has surprised military commanders and even one of the architects of the “surge” that boosted US troop numbers in the country this year, according to figures gathered by the US.

The figures show the numbers of suicide attacks, roadside bombings, mortar and other attacks on US forces and on the Iraqi population have more than halved since 30,000 extra troops in June.

Jack Keane, the former army general who helped persuade George W. Bush, US president, to increase troop numbers in Iraq, said the decrease in violence was “phenomenal” and had occurred far faster than he had expected.

“When you understand you are dealing with the complexity of a counter-insurgency operation which can take years to resolve, to have this dramatic a success in a short period of time, it’s unprecedented,” he said.

The US military says the number of civilian deaths has also fallen 60 per cent since the surge took effect, with a drop of 75 per cent in Baghdad. According to icasualties.org, the average monthly US death toll dropped from 96 for the first half of 2007 to 66 in the past four months. The average monthly death toll for Iraqi civilians and security forces has dropped from 2,157 to 1,223 in the same period.

Stephen Biddle, former adviser to General David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, said the most important factor was the spread of ceasefire agreements. He said the “key challenge” now was to make sure they could be adequately policed.

when the "US military police force" is withdrawn, as one would think that any smart resistance group would lay low during a troop buildup...

but we'll only find out IF the "US military police force" is EVER withdrawn.

In a way, though, it's hard for me to feel sorry for the GI's still there, because it is four and a half years after the original invasion, so most everyone in the service still has likely had to choose to stay, knowing they likely would go to Iraq.  Most anyone who had any understanding of their role in all of this (with like a few tragic exceptions) would have saved their money and gotten out of the service by now (just can't wait to hear folks jump me on that comment).

Of course, that says nothing about the Iraqi human pawns. but hey, they're brown...AND they're Muslim!...so who cares, right?

actually it is bad news for Repugs because people are going to start asking why we don't start leaving.

and, therefore, want it and all of it's endeavors, to fail.

In reality, liberals often love America and what it REALLY stands for (opportunity, open mindedness, freedom, individual rights, compassion towards its citizens) more than conservatives...by definition.

From the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary and the Free Online Dictionary:

Liberal:  "broad-minded; especially : not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms"

Conservative:   "Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change"

If anything, America has always been changing, mostly setting the pace for the rest of the world ever since World War 2, and in many areas, for much longer than that.

The thing about conservatives is that they want America to stay put, living in Pleasantville or Gipperland or Mayberry, with that old time religion and good old fashioned family values.

The last laugh is that nothing in human society ever stays put.

We don't use Iraq for political purposes the way most of the Republican's have.

Seems to me the country has been going steadily downhill on a parallel path with the rise to power of the conservatives. Coincidence? Doubtful.
Oh! look at the time! Got a minute?

Is it? This administration invites skepticism. Since we're obviously going to be in Iraq for a long time, we'll learn how real this is.

Of course, there is one reason why things have become peaceful: the success of the Iraqi ethnic cleansing program. Iraq is ready to be partitioned.
