But the tabloids of the late 1980s are almost as quaint compared to TER, etc. Also like the picture you posted, though it's one taken by the famous New Orleans photographer Bellocq of Storyville prostitutes in the early 20th century.
You can find many more of them if you Google E.J. Bellocq. Also, if you want to see a wonderful re-creation of that world, get the movie "Pretty Baby," starring Susan Sarandon as a prostitute and a 14-year-old Brooke Shields as her daughter. It really evokes that era beautifully. You can even stay in the hotel in which many of the interior scenes were shot. It's called "The Columns" and is on St Charles Ave., right on the old trolley line.
And am happy to share it with those interested. It's a fascinating read - it's 55 pages long.
I love the beginning where it says:
"Not that the reader would ever desire to visit these houses, Certainly Not! But we point out the location of these places in order that the reader may know how to avoid them, and that he may not select one of them for his boarding house when he comes to the city."
Then after the disclaimer is made, they throw all that nonsense to the wind. On page 35:
"No. 25 East Houston street marks the establishment of Harry Hill. This is a very popular resort for gentlemen, and is conducted on the most approved plan the genial and indefatigable landlord being equally active and skillful in providing the best that can be obtained for his numerous friends and patrons. An hour cannot be spent more pleasantly than at this establishment." That's right... stay away boys!
The book also explains that "between the hours of 7 and 11 o'clock, one is surprised to see so many well dressed and comely females whose ages range from fifteen to twenty five years, unattended by companions of the other sex. {...} As a general fact, these girls are smart, good looking, well educated and are neat and prepossessing in appearance."
Then we learn about Badgers, women who rob men counting on their guilt keeping them quiet. The author mentions it is in the best interest of the other girls that these bad seeds be dealt with - a rather liberal, considerate and surprising attitude.
i just love and hate that what we choose to do is still being portrayed as being "bad" in this society ....whatever is being said about this being the oldest profession and such, shut the f*** up and real up to your desires and needs! There were other professions besides prostitution which is nothing less then marriage nowadays. I know! The point of this post is if we can spread the understanding a little farther maybe some of the discrimination against providers will be almost non existent, and I hope so!
Most of Fanny Hill unapologetically details how much fun and enrichment the heroine experienced in her role as a provider; but the last few pages are a disclaimer about all the horrible things that could have happened to her, and how women should do everything in their power to avoid that profession. But it is very weak compared to the rest of the book.
There you will find ruins of old brothels outside of which are pictures depicting the talents of the women who resided within in the most amazing detail.
The guide from late Nineteenth century New York is not at all graphic, but they make points about the ambiance and civility (or lack there of), of the host and "boarders" in the house; as well as the clientelle. (I loved the crack about guys who turn their shirts inside out once a week so that they can wear them another week. I thought that was my trick! 8o)
