The failed mission to rescue American hostages did cost Carter the election and only magnified all the other missteps of his administration.
Yes I remember all the business about the Reagan camp colluding with the Ayatollah RuPaula Cum-on-me and at the time I thought it was bullshit like most Democrats at the time.
Years later, I still don't know what the truth of the matter is. But I do know that Jimmy Carter's was a failed Presidency, and he would never have been elected in the first place if not for the after effect of Watergate.
Many of the dynamics in this years ludicrous campaign smack of familiarity with that 1980 election, not the least of it the disconnect between the pollsters and the voters.
It will be somewhere between calamitous and an extinction level event if Trump wins. But it would not surprise me if he does.
As for Jimmy Carter, it is the only vote I regret casting in 46 years. Not that my vote ever mattered.
I stood in the rain, it seemed forever. I was made to vote by my first controlling husband, and told who to cast my vote for Bush Sr. I regretted it. I remember CNN being the first news to broadcast live coverage of Desert Storm and I would watch in the middle of the night nursing my baby. I remember the trials of Oliver North and trials of weapons being negotiated with Iran for the release of hostages. I have more respect for President Carter that failed his attempt, but refused to negotiate with terrorists. This mess is still going on today with proxy wars, arming the enemies with weapons. Russian warships with missiles heading towards Syria to complete the pipeline. And America still won't tell it's citizens to truth and censor news. I believe America is broke and our petrodollar is collapsing. I believe Saudi Arabia is behind all these wars, including attacks on 911 and our ambassador Stevens.
I also believe it is hard for a Republican to get elected when our economy is not great in the USA.
Many of you are better students of Presidential History than I am, but wasn't Carter nominated in the early days of Dem party nomination reforms? "The People" were complaining that the professional politicians were picking the final nominees in the smoke filled rooms leaving The People with little hope that their favorite candidates or dark horses could ever get on the ballot.
The Dems changed the rules, made the primaries more transparent, etc., etc., and the Carter team understood all the new rules better than anybody else and knew what they had to do in each state to mount and propel his candidacy.
Next thing you know, it's Candidate Carter.
Except for my dislike of smoking, sometimes, I wish they'd bring back the smoke filled rooms. And if you think the "smoke filled room" method is rigged, look what the "open" system did to Bernie Sanders' candidacy. He got smoked by the "open" process!
