Hello Gentlemen,

When a lady comes to the NOVA/DC area, there are so many locations for her to choose from.  I am curious to know which area do you find the most accommodating and convenient for you?  Which areas do you dislike and why is the Tyson's corner area disliked so much.

Thanks,
Juliette

I live in the burbs, and am mostly a weekend warrior, so it is perfect.

summary.
There are basically 2 types of hobbyists in the DC area, there are those who are more urbane, in the city proper frequently, ride Metro all the time, etc.  Then there are the hardened suburbanites who will not get out of their cars & never ride public transit.  The former prefer areas like Dupont Circle which has many hotels, is directly Metro accessible & is also a lively urban neighborhood with numerous restaurants & clubs plus art galleries, etc. The other group hates Dupont's traffic congestion & scarce & costly parking & much prefer areas like Tysons Corner, which features numerous hotels with (mostly) free parking but a decided office park/shopping mall feel to it.  For a couple of years, while they were building the Metro extension & the HOT lanes on the Beltway at the same time, the traffic in Tysons, particularly in rush hour, was the worst in the area bar none.

So what many touring ladies do is split the difference, doing a couple of days in each area on a visit, thus catering to both.  There are also one or two compromise locations, like Crystal City in Arlington, many hotels & restaurants, its own Metro stop, but a lot of underground parking which is less costly than DC areas like Dupont & much of it free on weekends & after 4:00 PM weekdays.

One other consideration is for the provider herself.  If you're staying in Dupont or most downtown areas (Capitol Hill, Thomas Circle, etc.), you don't really need a car as you can find restaurants, convenience stores, wine shops etc. within easy walking distance (this also generally applies to Crystal City as well).  If you're in Tysons, with few exceptions nothing is walkable & you either need a rental car or have to either eat where you're staying or take taxi's to & from dinner.  Sadly, said rental car will spend 90% + of the time sitting in the hotel parking lot at $ 35/day or whatever.

Finally, a word for my Maryland associates, most of them dislike Dupont & downtown as well & dislike the longish trek to Tysons as well, so some touring ladies will add on a day or two in the hotel-rich area around the BWI airport.  For visitors staying there a car is probably even more necessary than in Tyson.

Hope this helps.

The Dulles Tech Corridor seems like an under served market. For folks who work and live in NoVA, driving into DC can be a nightmare. Tyson's is as far as some go East. If more beautiful ladies spent time a little more West (Dulles, Herndon, Reston), I for one, would save a lot on gas money.   ;-)   But, I'm guessing Tyson's is the better middle ground that serves both areas, and alas, I find myself surrounded by shopping malls and car dealerships too often.

I hate Tyson's. Passionately. It's most of what I hate in sprawling burbs. But that's just me. And mostly from an urban planning viewpoint, but also as a staunch city gal. But yay there are lots of hotels with free parking and shopping malls? No need to get on the icky icky public transportation...

just wondering, are you a city planner by profession?

This area is so large and getting around at times so difficult many visitors have more than one venue when visiting.
One area to consider is Crystal City..Popular Im told for its METRO access. Very convenient to Regan Airport and all those government workers in DC too.
Hope this helps...Best wishes to you!
Oh, Tysons Corner is a very popular venue if the client is coming from a relatively close by location...not so much if coming from DC or, heaven help you, MD. BWI definitely should be in the mix for those guys which is really not that far from Baltimore as well.

Dupont/downtown and Tyson's/exurbs - both are great if the specific hotel or apt works well.

But there is one place I hate - Crowne Plaza Tysons Corner.  It has two towers with identical room numbering and poor signage.

You can imagine the potential confusion.  Plus the desk has eyes on everyone walking in.  Unpleasant.

Thanks for the info everyone.  It sounds like Crystal City would be a place I may visit the next time I am in the DC area.  The reason I asked about Tyson's corner was because the last time I was here,  I had a lot of gentlemen who informed me that they would love to have visited me if only I was in another area besides the Tyson's corner area.  I have never understood why that is.  I guess I could have asked.  I really like the Alexandria area.  I just don't like the fact that I have to pay for parking.

....Crystal City (Arlington VA), Tysons Corner area (McLean/Vienna/Merrifield/pinch of Falls Church), Fairfax I find myself in the most (due to requests). If anything the Tysons area is extremely popular.
If you want to be in DC the Dupont Circle-Woodley Park area or Downtown DC are good too.
Imo when traveling to any major metro area it's good to split time within the city (proper) and at least one suburb.

Crystal City is definitely my choice.  Usually, easy in and easy out with plenty of hotels to choose from.

TrAffic and travel time in the DCmetro is such a pain i think you'll find most hobbyist prefer locations they can get to quickly (15-20 minutes max) - but homes and workplaces are so spread out that for everyone, the prefered locations are different,  there is no one place that suits all.  Tysons, downtown DC, Dulles, all different areas - best to rotate locations around - youll access a different client base at each.

I think you will find the Tysons area superior to most  others: highly paid professionals live nearby, many fine hotels, and now the Silver Line metrorail
