I would argue that a large percentage of learning and skill needed to learn are developed and nurtured at home. Times have changed, rather than parents reading to their children and helping them build and learn things they are given a iPad or Xbox and left to do what they want. Its the one thin that can and has been proven over and over. Children who's parents start reading to them at a young age and are active in their education are twice as likely to graduate and go on to secondary education.
We think that's it s our school systems job to educate our children but shouldn't parents ultimately be responsible? If their child fails to receive an education isn't it their fault as much as anyone else? Parents need to know and should care about their children's education or the education system can't succeed.

To use a wrestling term, I'm dropping out of Gonzo Kayfabe here because I am seriously appalled at just how dumbed down our educational system has become.

I don't care if you are a left wing right wing middle of the road or an illegal immigrant from Planet Stupid.

Surely there are those among you who see the degradation of our educational system and recognize this is where it all ends, or begins anew.

Instead of bitching about all the problems caused to our K-12 children by such political tripe as Bush's failed No Child Left Behind or the truly laughable clusterfuck that is the Michelle Lunch Program, can we please, just for one lousy thread suspend the idiotic slurs bigotries and political bullshit we usually sling round here and offer some concrete dialog and ideas of how to improve our educational system, for it is only by teaching our children truly to understand right from wrong will we get back on track again.

And yes, I know it won't change as long as the wrong people are running things, but there's got to be something we as people can still do, otherwise what does it fucking matter who wins in November?

Me, I'd start at the elementary school level and work towards a generation of educated skilled and eager young minds more interested in careers and innovation and creativity than in the Kardashians or cutting themselves to honor Justin Bieber.
 WTF!

Learn things. I've had to. I wish I had answers or at least an inkling of a notion.

...far outshines where we of my generation were at as kids, at least in an academic sense. We spent more time running around fields and woodlands without adult supervision, and we rode our bikes to night games at the ball park getting home around 11:00 without problems, and today kids can't have those freedoms or the education that comes with, but...

I know there are places where the school system is maybe more dismal than here, but basically today's kids are smart and doing just fine.

Okay, flame me for being "easily impressed," but I am only going by my own experience of the families I'm around these days.

of their kids, stop social promotion, make teachers have degrees in the subjects they are teaching (except for elementary education), make a high school diploma an achievement, stop with letting kids re-take tests . . . .

hold kids, parents AND teachers accountable for the learning of the child

blow up the teachers unions - they don't care about kids anyway, just dues

competition will fix a lot of these issues

none of this is close to being possible, the days of personal responsibility is long over, so we will continue to have really stupid kids

likely to join the taker party (dem) until there is no one left to take from

Just ask the affluent. Well, don't, because they won't tell you. They want to keep it a secret. The truth is all parents want their young fledglings to be launched from the best perches possible, and they want the least competition for to perches as possible. As long as the affluent have the control to make certain the competition is minimal, we will continue to see our educational system fail. I'm in a unique situation where I can see, in my area, and talking to others around the country, my area is not unique, is that there are major skirmishes, between affluent parents, in getting their kids into the preferred day-care centers. These day-care centers are direct pipelines to the preferred pre-k schools, preferred elementary schools, preferred middle schools, preferred high schools to the elite colleges and universities. Those in the know, know that the preparation needs to start in the first three years of life, and the preferred day-care centers used by the elite know this fact. The Democrats know it and that's why they want legislation to help all children get what they need from the beginning. Republican's not so much. ;)

Headstart begins with those at the age of 5, though the most impactful work is done in the first 3 years of life, though this shows who is interested giving all kids a solid start to learning.
