You are assuming Trump doesn't crash even further in the polls. I assume no such thing.

If by polling, and by real tangible, sentiment, the GOP (i.e. the party AND the voters) wants to dump out of Trump, they should.

Now, I am talking about a Hills lead of 15-20 points and 70-75% of the country saying there is no way they would cast a vote for Trump, or something along those lines AND and if the overwhelming majority of the R electorate want a new candidate, they should get one.

What that new candidate would do against Hills that late in the game, no one knows.

We are in unchartered waters with a nominee who has 70% disapproval.

For the R's to just cede the election to Hills, again based on all the above being true, THAT would end the R party

Some have said this is an effort to gauge support for a Dump Trump effort at the convention.  Priebus denies it.  But even if he's telling the truth (and I'd say the odds are that he is) it says a lot about the state of the Republican party.
It's hard to say what will be worse for them: Trump as the nominee leading them to disaster or Trump ousted and millions of his supporters leaving the party in a huff.
Yes, the publication is called HotAir but there's more than hot air here

I doubt if this news will cause Trump to tow the line like the party officials wish him to do. It will most likely to cause him to become even more unhinged due to the perceived betraying.
