I've had some inconsistent results with the screening process, so I'm not sure how long it nomrally takes. If it's a call to your work (a common system) it could happen pretty quickly. I think it ultimately depends on how busy the provider is.
If you have no provider references, you will probably have to give up some personal information, such as work phone number. You can also go through verification place like date check. Or if you search around, you can find some providers who do not require references -- this was how I did my first encounter.
