Yeah PayPal is a nightmare. I found a website that allows you to buy gift cards with paypal accounts. That could be a good way to get around the whole issue.

I was banned from Paypal for transferring money to a provider (ironically enough as b-day present, not in exchange for favors). They froze thousands of dollars in my account for over six months and eventually let me transfer it out with a warning never to use their system again.
I've heard horror stories of providers getting their accounts shut down and no access to their money. I've had clients that wanted to pay me with PayPal and I always decline because I have one PayPal account (just one) and I use that for when I sell on eBay...and I don't want to screw it up by giving my business PayPal account to a client I barely know. Plus if the poop hits the fan, that client can take the money back. Cash is the more viable (and sound) method to pay us providers.

...when dealing with providers always prefer gift cards or that other form of digital payment whose name I've sworn never to mention again on these here boards (because that would make me a "shill" for "them", you see...).
A provider friend of mine used it once for a $300 deposit, followed a few weeks later for an $800 cancellation fee. Nothing "provider-ish" in her email address etc, but the account was frozen for inappropriate use. I'm not sure if she ever got her $800 back!
