...were graduates of the low-rated and recently accredited Regent University School of Law.  Does the name Monica Goodling ring a bell?

Why are Regent Univ. folks Thumpers?  Here's what they say about themselves: On its own website's admissions page, Regent states that it seeks to admit "students who are serious about the critical roles they will assume as future counselors, conciliators, defenders of the faith, effective client advocates and followers of Christ." Later it adds "Regent Law seeks men and women who are dedicated to becoming Christian leaders who will change the world for Christ."

Whatever happened to the oath to support and defend the Constitution when working for the govt?  I guess Thumpers are exempt from telling the truth when they put their hands on a Bible.

...imprimatur on adultery.  Now you can tell your wife or SO that the good reverend says it's natural for men to wander.  Advise her that Robertson also says she should just be thankful that you've given her a home and children as well as food and clothing so she should stop being an ungrateful bitch.

In God we tryst!

I am not a Christian.  I am not even religious, even though I do respect it.

That said, I find the use of pejoratives to describe groups of people as particularly offensive.  Rather than give a reasoned explanation of why the opinion is stupid or wrong, it is just easier to stoop to name-calling

"Thumpers" is frequently used on this board.  Would anyone not object to the pejoratives for Blacks, women, Hispanics, or any other group.

People have frequently said that Christians are the only group that can be mocked so openly. I would bet that the use of the "N-word" or any other derogatory term would be flagged and removed

but if anyone is worthy of being called a "Thumper" it's got to be Pat Robertson. and please stop with the "I am not even religious" refrain. You've been saying it for years, but always come down on the side of religion. Sorry, but I am not buying it. No one spends as much time defending religion as you do, or seems to take it so personally whenever religion is "attacked" like you do, yet claims not to be a religious man. I call bullshit.

If I just simply state the position, people are bound to think I have a dog in the fight.

Absolute full disclosure, I am a lapsed Jew how only goes to places of worship for weddings, funerals, or art and architecure.  My SO is a lapsed Catholic (two-generation lapsed) who works in a Catholic school.  My father, a Jewish doctor, was also on the board at two Catholic hostipals in the L.A. area, which he thought were two of the best hospitals in So. Cal.  That was in the old days (pre-1970's) when most of the nursing staff were nuns.  That is where my respect for religion came from.

Yes, I have defended religion for a long time.   Religion is often attacked, so it is impossible to take the other position without doing so.  The alternative is to not respond.

On the other hand, for years I have been decrying ad hominem attacks and slurs.  It is not just in this area that I have urged a polite debate.

I am not taking it personally.  As I explained, any perjorative is offensive.  If someone used the N-word, I would object, and I am a honkey.

but just because I don't like you, doesn't mean that you are wrong about everything, and in this case I happen to agree with you. Calling Pat Robertson a thumper is hardly undeserved, and calling anyone who follows him a thumper is equally as deserved.

...describing a group of people who share an addiction of choice; the other insults an entire race of people because of the way God made them (see what I did there?)

You can't even WRITE the N-word but there is nothing wrong with writing "Thumper."

Calling someone a crackhead, a drunk, a tree-hugger or a bleeding heart liberal is nowhere near the equivalent of calling someone the N-word.  As someone who uses hyperbole, I can certainly recognize your hand-wringing for what it is.

BTW, do I REALLY have to give you a reasoned explanation of why Rev. Robertson's opinion is stupid or wrong?  And what would you call his audience of mouth-breathing droolers who believe every word he says and fill his coffers with millions of dollars?  Get out your checkbook and send him a few bucks.

All created by men to control men and women and to keep power in their hands. The so called religious leaders the originators of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Deception). Every single problem we faced yesterday, and today is because of religion. Tomorrow will be only different if men and women wakes up to religion and say enough is enough.

Like wise man once said, God has nothing to do with religion and religion has nothing to do with God!

religion has caused man to believe in the illusion of separation of God.  even permanently.  No that's not my God
