All this kind of relates to my previous OP about the U.S gun homicide rate. Instances like this point out a very flawed U.S. mental health system, as well as a flawed justice system that fails to prevent criminals & loonies from carrying out mass murders. Perhaps that's why the U.S. gun homicide rate is too high. However there will be instances where even improved justice/ mental health systemes won't prevent these kinds of tragedies from occurring.
2nd thoughts on James Holmes if he used TER; many of the providers are quite discriminating in their screening processes; think he might have been turned down by 3 TER providers ? He's SO crazy that even that possibility is not out of the question. Even if he did pass a screening test, all it would take is one provider getting a look at him as pictured below & she'd be out the door.
You keep posting about mental health in this country. Do you want every creepy dude locked up or drugged? Everything is 20/20 in hindsight but there are tons of weird dudes like Holmes walking around and not causing any trouble. You can't force somebody to see a shrink or lock him up because he hangs out alone in his basement all day.
Points to factors other than gun availability & mental illness is one of the key problems that drives these mass murders. I'm not advocating "police sate measures" against the POTENTIALLY violent headcases; HOWEVER, Holmes college shrink made officials aware that he was potentially dangeous, but nothing was done because he dropped out before measures could be implemented. Bad luck. Also possibility existed that Holmes' parents were aware of his "condition"; if so, they could have perfomed an "intervention" that could have prevented the slaughter.
This country is woefully uneducated about mental Illness & until the population wises up, more of these tragedies will occur.

you can teach people all you want, but it wont stop someone from flying under the radar so to speak. people are gonna flip out, thats a fact. and some of them wont know how to handle it, and will hurt or even kill other people. it is isnt a fun thing to know, but its how it is. just gotta deal with it. and in this country, one of our problems is that we dont care until its too late. you cant teach the unwilling to learn people.

Yes, I know the death of so many people is not a laughing matter, but Pri's underlying premise that sexual repression can create a pot just ready to boil over is one worth discussing. It certainly beats the kneejerk reaction by most libs that somehow gun control could have prevented this.

Everytime someone like this appears he turns into a monster (which they are) but now they look ugly, crazy and you can see the evil in their eyes and stuff. But before that they look like normal people. and that's what's scary.
But then there is the other side like the actors on movies and tv who look evil and mean and that's why they're given those roles... but in real life they all nice and cool and normal.
