I saw a clip of a round table discussion on who is considered a "athlete". Again, I saw about 2 minutes of it, but Reggie Theus (former NBA player and coach), made the outlandish statement that NASCAR drivers are real athletes. He pretty much got trashed for that statement.
Its the cars and the crew that make one a winner. In comparision to other sports, you can race until your grandkids become drivers as in the case of Andretti. You may last long enough in baseball rhat your kid can join you. Thats even rare
I had to be helped out of the car after the 2 hour races.
I played AA minor league baseball and was all-state in football. Not bragging just setting the situation.
Somebody said (I gotta find the exact quote)about sports and games. "there are only two true sports: auto racing and boxing, the rest are just games."
I still want to do Sebring as a driver and I've been trying to talk my 2 former racing buddies into it. They think I'm nuts.
Having a great car and crew is how you win, true enough. But even with a bad car / crew - they ain't sitting in that driver seat. You crash, you get hurt / die. They come and pick up the pieces.
