I know this one is a very usual question here, some guys keep telling there are some areas around Union S that are not safe even to me they all look the same. I stayed once on Stockton and was fine but I heard Market St is better, what do u guys think? I'm only a few days away from my trip to SF and I need to book my hotel soon Thanks and Kisses Kianna
Union Square is generally a safe bet for quality hotels - priceline is a great resource for reasonably priced rooms at a 4 star level - bidding is the best option.
As for Market versus Stockton, I'm not sure there are too many great hotels directly on Market - The Four Seasons being the only notable exception which springs to mind.
The one area to avoid at all costs is the Tenderloin; and yes, it borders Union Square, so keep that in mind when booking your room.
Stay safe and have a great time in SF!

Market street is very long. Market is very (very) nice, from Powel Street to the Ferry building. Safe any time day or night. *HOWEVER* to the West of Powell... not so nice. The Whitcombe for example, is a decent 3 star hotel inside, but the neighborhood is more 1 star Any visitors would likely be leery - and the hotel posts security at the door requiring room keys for entrance after dark.
For those not from San Francisco, the Tenderloin is roughly bounded by:
Ellis on the North Mason/6th on the East Mission on the South Larkin/9th on the West
Now, that's not to say you can't walk down Market street to the Orpheum Theater (or Crazy Horse Strip club depending on taste LOL), but you might feel more comfortable taking a cab back if it's late -- especially if you don't have big city skills for dealing with panhandlers.
advice. There are 4 ladies that I always schedule when they come to SFO.
Your BEST bets are Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Embarcadero or the hotels right in that 3 block area. Plenty of parking, plenty of people around - you'll feel comfortable day / night.
Any where on Market St with a number higher than 4th street...forget it.
South of Market ...no place to stay anyway
Union Square - within a one block area ..ONLY..is ok. Yes, use some caution at night after 9pm.
SF is a city and like any bigger city has it's share of trouble areas. As noted in one post - and the physical description is accurate - the Tenderloin is a no-no..even during the day. I'm a big guy and I'm careful walking there in the day time.
I am always surprised at how few ladies stay in downtown San Jose for doing business. Granted it's hick-town compared to SF when it comes to the sites and things to do. But there are a lot of men with money in Silicon Valley who will not travel to SF due to the hassle. I know 2 ladies who stay in San Jose and do really well. Lots of nice techie guys with bucks! And there is some fun in San Jose...you just have to look for it. Especially during hockey season.
I agree with most of your advice channelguy, but not the part about 'no place to stay anyway' when looking south of Market Street. I have often met my favorite lady at the The Palace Hotel, The Palomar, SF Marriott, W Hotel, Intercontinental, and several times at the Marriott Courtyard near the ballpark. Strictly speaking, they are all on the south side of Market and are fine hotels.
