I don't know what he's like behind closed doors, or if he'll turn out to be an online character that annoys the crap out of me.  Both are doubtful, but once a name is revealed it can't be unheard.  Otherwise yeah, your approach of gifting days would be perfect.

Probably will just offer him my card for a single month's membership so he can get his feet wet.  Renewals will be on his dime.

Got a friend who's interested in joining TER but scared of papertrails; would love a way for me to buy a gift membership (month) and just give him the access code or whatever.  That way he can join anonymously.

Yeah, I know it's easier to share my account, but there's some things I just won't do.

Would that accomplish what you're looking for?  They would still need to become a TER member, but not need to pay for VIP days as they would be gifted (transferred from another member's account).

Of course, there are other ways to earn VIP days without paying for them.

I suspect TER would not allow anyone to become a member without providing basic information about themselves, i.e. name and email.  I can see perils in allowing someone to become a member, especially a VIP member, anonymously.
