Many South and East Asian countries have a very different view of 'gender' than we do in the West.  Where ours is largely based on 'equipment' and restricted to the male/female construct, many cultures see gender as a behavioral thing and can have three, four or even more categories.

The term "ladyboy" for example is based on the Thai term "katoey" which could mean a male-to-female transgender or an effeminate young man.  So in these cultures, there is no real concept of "trans" (one becoming another)...they simply ARE.  So even though the behavior/role might still be seen as 'abnormal,' the idea that it exists as its own thing (I think) leads to greater tolerance.

As for the sheer number of 'drop dead' Asian TS ladies, I think it probably has to do with a couple things:  First, because there is greater cultural acceptance, I think gender reassignment treatments are available at a younger age.  Second, Asian males tend to have 'softer' features and smaller frames than other races.

I would think the males most likely to identify as "female" would be the ones still fairly petite when they reached adolescence.  Combine that with the fact hormone treatments would be available to them before they developed 'harder' masculine features, and I think that could explain why there are so many "lady like" Asian TS girls out there.
