Does someone call 911 and say, “Help, I’ve been prostituted”?
Prostitution should not be a crime

St. Augustine observed, “Remove prostitutes from human affairs and you will destroy everything with lust.” To prove it, our military has cracked down on prostitution and we have seen a disturbing increase in sexual assaults.

Back home, there are Puritans around here who insist on meddling in the moral arrangements of others, and they enthusiastically use prison to house these people like real criminals.

Only actions that infringe on the rights of others can properly be termed crimes. To be a crime, there has to be a victim. So, in the case of prostitution or solicitation, who is the victim? Does someone call 911 and say, “Help, I’ve been prostituted”? No, instead the cops pretend to be a sex worker or potential customer and trap someone. Is this really something taxpayers want to pay for?

Prostitution is the voluntary sale (or rental) of a labor service. Individuals own their own bodies and their labor and have the absolute right to decide how those labor services should be used. As long as the prostitution transaction is voluntary, there is no justification for governmental interference.

If municipalities wanted to assure a safe, clean experience, perhaps a public health agency could certify individuals for that purpose. From what I’ve read about the fees and bureaucratic red tape involved in the “licensing,” that doesn’t seem to be the goal. The result is likely to be that this activity will be driven further underground, where it may become less safe rather than more safe. Who wants that?

I am a red blooded american who happily paid his taxes as I made a nice living, after the real estate bust, and construction vanished I realized I had not made the cut and had been paying $100,000 in taxes for power hungry ego maniacs to spend for their benefit.  I may  be bitter that I did not make enough to survive the downturn, but it is still hard to swallow when nobody from any of the big banks has been charged with any crimes and they made waaaaaay more money than I did.
