TORONTO  —  Actor Matt Damon says the selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican nominee for vice president in the United States could end up "like a really bad Disney movie" if John McCain wins the November presidential election.

"You do the actuary tables, there's a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term, and it'll be President Palin," said Damon, who was in town to promote ONEXONE, a Canadian children's charity
expanding to the U.S., during the Toronto Film Festival.

"It's like a really bad Disney movie, "The Hockey Mom.' Oh, I'm just a hockey mom from Alaska, and she's president," said Damon. "She's facing down Vladimir Putin and using the folksy stuff she learned at the hockey rink. It's absurd."

Damon said the public needs to know more about such things as her views on creationism and censorship.

Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Palin, called the comments "name-calling."

"It's not surprising that the Barack Obama and his celebrity supporters continue to tear down Gov. Palin with little more than blatant name-calling," she said. "It's clear they're threatened by a candidate who actually has a record of achieving reform and change, while Barack Obama just talks about it."

Damon is currently appearing in a TV ad titled "Voices," by the bipartisan, anti-poverty group ONE and its Vote '08 project. The voices of others are superimposed as the actor speaks, including Cindy McCain, wife of Republican nominee John McCain; and Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"In this election year, please join the millions of Americans from every party — Democrat, Republican and Independent, who are working together," goes the ad. "We welcome your voice."

I'm certainly no fan of Sarah Palin, but recently a judge in San Carlos Cali (burb of Frisco) ruled that a Sarah Palin for President in 2012 billboard could be banned. This pisses me off.

If freedom of speech means anything, it means that you protect the right of people wouldn't like to hear. It amazes me that so many people don't understand this very simple concept.

but I actually agree with the judge.(with the limited information provided in the article).

I think the billboard company was intentionally trying to put the City of San Carlos on the defensive by making the sign about Sarah Palin. By doing so, they made a commercial billboard a political statement, and thus invoked the 1st Ammendment to further a commercial enterprise.

I think the billboard company was attempting to manipulate the system for it's own ends, and the judge caught on.

I do applaud you however for sticking up for the rights of those you despise, that really is the purpose of the 1st Ammendment, to protect the rights of those making unpopular POVs.

...but are you saying that commercial billboards are forbidden from political statements? Would a mom & pop shop not be allowed to sell Obama or McCain stickers then? I don't see what the difference is.

they want to ban billboards as an eyesore, or at least that is the impression I get. If that is the case, than they are justified in their actions, if not and they are only trying to bar speech that they disagree with, than I would agree with your POV.

Unfortunately, the article is not completely clear on whether it's the content or the billboard that caused the city to have an issue.

If it is a matter of the city trying to cover it's ass, like the school board in Miss. when they cancelled the entire school prom simply to prevent a lesbian couple from attending, then I land completely on the side of free speech. If OTOH it was simply a matter of a billboard company trying to force a municipality into allowing them to erect "for profit" billboards, then I come down on the side of the city.

...but isn't it the responsibility of the city to demonstrate that they plan to remove all billboards? I don't know if that's the case or not.

It's very clear that the city that the city is not regulating content. The city's billboard ban doesn't differentiate between commercial and political advertising. It simply restricts all billboards.  There's no free speech issue here.

but the article was not completely clear on the subject, so I wanted to leave myself an out if I were mistaken about the city's intent.

It appears to me that the billboard company was trying to get a foothold into erecting billboards by interjecting 1st Ammendment issues into an arena where they did not apply. Just more bullshit legal maneuvering by a company trying to circumvent a duly passed law.

And that is a conservative number. That being said, I doubt she cares what you think of her. I wish I could be such a "joke" lol

It doesn't sound like the judge was ruling against the message.  He ruled that the company could not place a billboard at that location.
I think the actions of the judge was correct and proper.  They are free to place the message on a billboard at another location.

The billboard company is trying to force a change in the local laws regulating billboards.  This would bring back the billboard clutter that was an ugly eyesore in this country before Ladybird Johnson's Highway Beautification Project.
