You can look around on this link and find lots of info. Briefly, the DC area is big and getting around sucks.
Four or five areas have emerged which visitors often split their time in. In no particular order they are....
....DuPont Circle in DC, Crystal City in Arlington, Tyson's Corner, VA, BWI Airport area in Maryland.
Each has its features. Hope this is of some help.
Best wishes to you

Those are the big three (well at least two).

First timer, would suggest DuPont so if it doesn't go well, at least you have things to do other than sit in your hotel room.

Vamikey has a good post; I would only add that you should avoid Montgomery County MD (nice, but very serious LE).

The most densely populated areas have heavy LE. That is nothing new. I would say Waldorf, MD is pretty good location when the girls head down there. Not a great selection though. I admit Silver Spring area typically has the most quality with economic pricing. I stay away from Dupont Circle and that NW DC corridor as traffic is too heavy.

Lots of busts if you are in the social media and backpage scene. There was a bust just last week in Calvert county and also some busts in early june in St Mary's county.
