Hello,

I am kindly asking for recommendations of any remarkably excellent restaurants you insist a "foodie" tries while I am here in DC.

I admit I most often spoil myself with fine-dining, however I also love great little finds that are neither famous nor high-end.  Small family owned restaurants with great food always have a certain charm I can appreciate...

My favorites include Italian, Spanish tapas, Ethiopian, Japanese, Greek, Latin American, Caribbean......... oh who am I kidding?  I love ALL foods.

Lastly...... any great Chinese Dim Sum places in the area?

Thanks very much for your advice!

xo, Mia

Penn Quarter, Bibiana near City Center/Metro Center, and Osteria Morini, a NYC import on Water St. on the SE waterfront; for the best Spanish tapas in the area go to Jaleo in Penn Quarter, and don't overlook Jaleo's sister restaurant across the street, Oyamel with it's assortment of Mexican small plates (real Mexican, not Tex-Mex).  And if you fancy seafood, Fiola's sister place, Fiola Mare in the Washington Harbor complex on the water in Georgetown.

I have been to both Ping Pong locations and agree that the Dim Sum is good but, I think the Dim Sum is better at Tony Cheng's in China Town.

Don't forget the Blue Duck in the West End.

It is a bit pricey, but will be worth it.

Hi Raquel, I would love to join you for a cock-tail at Riggsby and fund it. Would you serve it in tall glasses with high heels only? Thanks. Maurice.

tiny, hole-in-the-wall place that does phenomenal ramen.

so lovely! Generally hate places that you can't make a reservation for, but the wait wasn't that that bad and it's a lovely little place.

DC is going through a restaurant Renaissance so you might have more choices than time.  I consider myself a foodie and here are some of my favs:

1) Tapas - Jaleo 7th & E St NW this is Jose Andreas first resto in DC and he is the godfather of tapas in the city; for a newer spot there's Barcelona at 1622 14th St NW (14th St has gone through a huge gentrification with new restos all along the the street for several blocks);

2) Ethiopian you should try Ambassador at 1907 9th St NW (actually it's Ethiopian and Eritrean fare) very mom and pop place in the "little Ethiopia" section of the city along 9th St between T St and U St/Florida Ave NW (also Florida Ave NW is going through a huge gentrification so you'll find many new restos and bars heading west along Florida ave which becomes U St after 9th St)

3) 17th St between Q and P Sts NW have 2 excellent restos for Greek and Japanese cuisine Komi (Greek, but pricey they do chef tasting/prix fixe menu) and Sushi Taro (Japanese they do Kaiseki and Sushi tasting menus as well as a la carte, excellent sake menu);

4) One of my go to spots for a traditonal American cuisine and great cocktails is the restaurant at Tabard Inn near Dupont Circle on N St NW between 17th and 18th St, a historical old school hotel lots of dark wood and a fireplace living room/antechamber.

Le Diplomate on 14th Street.  It is not a reproduction of a French cafe, it is the real thing.  They went to France and bought the fixtures, furniture, woodwork, etc from real French cafes - the food is good too.  One of the few things that Joe Biden and Newt Gingrich have in common is a fondness for Le Diplomate.
