Its very very hard to get it through oral and very rare. But their are other things you can catch through oral like herpes.

It IS POSSIBLE to contract HIV from ANY type of sexual conduct.  Any transmission of blood or sexual fluids can theoretically transmit the virus.  Obviously, it is much more rare to contract through oral sex, but it can happen.  Anal sex carries the most risk, followed by vaginal sex, followed by oral contact with the genitals and then oral contact with the lips.  If there is a cut or a lesion of any kind on the lips or mouth, the virus can be transmitted orally.  I should note that it is quite rare for this to happen, but it is possible and you should know the risks.  I repeat:  any exchange of blood or sexual fluids can transmit HIV.

Had to post this, I have a good friend who is studying to be an AIDS researcher.  Every semester she regales me with all the new stuff they are finding out.  She works in a free clinic and deals with people all the time who test positive and say , "But I thought you couldn't get it if you __________."  The only 100% way to not get the virus is abstinence or a monogomous sexual relationship.  Barring that, sexual contact through condoms/dental dams, when those items are used correctly, is considered to be 99% safe.  Even if they aren't used correctly it's about 75% effective at preventing the spread of STD's.  The lesson here is to ALWAYS wear a condom when engaging in this hobby.  It's the only way to go.
